The IDF uncovered what it said was a powerful bomb planted on the Gaza-Israel border, on Tuesday morning.The bomb, placed on the Palestinian side of the border with southern Gaza, was found next to the security fence, and was designed to go off as an army patrol passed by.However, the army neutralized the explosive.“Had it gone off, we would have seen loss of life,” a military source told The Jerusalem Post.The device was discovered by forces that included IDF Combat Engineering Corps units – which specialize in the discovering of hidden bombs and removing them safely.“Terrorist elements are exploiting the area near the fence to plant explosives and activate terrorism against the IDF and Israeli civilians,” the army said in a statement. It added that it took a grave view of any attempt to harm Israelis.On Friday evening, a Palestinian rocket fired from the Gaza Strip exploded in the Eshkol region of southern Israel. The projectile fell in a field and failed to cause injuries, an army spokeswoman said.A day before that, IDF soldiers fired on Palestinian suspects who approached a closed security zone on the border between northern Gaza and Israel and attempted to damage the fence.An army spokeswoman said a group of suspects entered the zone and began sabotaging the security fence and that soldiers dispatched to the area attempted to persuade them to leave.When that failed, soldiers opened fire, striking one or possibly two suspects.
