A Druse family who - unusually - donated the organs of their teenage son met with the families of the recipients on Monday at the Rabin Medical Center-Beilinson Campus, where some of the operations were performed.
Hamudi Yusuf Hatib, 15, of Kafr Samia was killed in a road accident. His family, Tira's Imam Fadil Abed and Sheikh Muhammad Hatib (Hamudi's grandfather) called for Israelis of all faiths to agree to donate the organs of their deceased loved ones.
The Hatib family, who had consulted with Druse clergymen for permission to donate their son's organs, brought photos of him and received thanks from the emotional recipient families.
Four patients - Jews and Muslims - received the boy's lungs, kidneys, pancreas and liver. The recipients ranged in age from 12-year-old Aisha Samra, who received the liver, to 55-year-old Yehudit Brenner, who received the lungs.
Gadi Ben-Dror, chairman of the ADI organization that encourages organ donation, presented a monetary award to the family, to be used to memorialize Hamudi Yusuf.
