Dozens of Iraq war protesters attempted to block entrances to the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, hoping to draw attention to the profits made in recent years by military contractors.
Forty-four people were arrested on disorderly conduct charges after they sat in and around Wall Street in lower Manhattan, police said.
The event, which organizers said involved about 70 people, came a day after hundreds converged on a park near the United Nations headquarters to call for an end to the war, which started four years ago Tuesday.
"We wanted to bring a specific focus to Wall Street - to where all the profits are being made," said Frida Berrigan, an organizer with the War Resisters League.
