The terror attacks on Mumbai have underscored the need for the West to help Pakistan tackle terrorism, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Wednesday as he arrived for talks with NATO counterparts.
NATO is concerned that mounting tension with India over the Mumbai attacks may distract Pakistan from countering extremists based in tribal areas on the Afghan border who are blamed for the mounting attacks on international forces and other targets in Afghanistan.
Miliband said the West should help Pakistan with political, economic and security support to tackle the threat from terrorists based in the Afghan border regions and linked to the disputed territory of Kashmir. Indian authorities have blamed last week's attacks on a Pakistani terrorist group based in Kashmir.
Miliband said Pakistan should remain focused on those internal threats in the wake of the Mumbai attacks.
