China announces nationwide probe of milk powder

China's government has announced a nationwide investigation of milk powder linked to a rash of kidney stones in infants and one death. The official Xinhua News Agency said Friday the Health Ministry has ordered local officials to report all possible cases immediately. The dairy that produced the milk powder has ordered a recall of some 700 tons of the product, according to state media and one of the company's investors. Reports of the possibly tainted milk powder fueled new worries about Chinese product safety following a spate of injuries and deaths blamed on tainted toothpaste and other goods.
