Germany charges German-Iranian man with spying

German prosecutors have charged a German-Iranian dual national with spying for Teheran, alleging he procured machinery and parts that could be used for producing conventional weapons and sent them to Iran, a federal prosecutors' spokesman said Thursday. The 52-year-old man, identified only as Saeed Sadeghi E. in line with German privacy laws, faced a possible five years in prison if convicted of spying and breaking German export laws, said spokesman Frank Wallenta. The alleged spy was accused of working for Iran's Defense Industries Organisation, a state-run organization that falls under the country's Ministry of Defense. Between 2002 and 2006 he purchased "a multitude of raw materials, equipment and spare parts with a total value of US$836,040," and then sent them to Iran, according to prosecutors. He was arrested on November 6, 2006 in his home near Duesseldorf, held in custody and released on February 22, 2007. Formal charges were filed on August 25, 2008. It was not yet clear when his trial might begin.
