Malaysia's Anwar arrested before interrogation over sodomy accusation

A lawyer says Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been arrested just before he was scheduled to give his statement to police over sodomy allegations. Counsel Sankara Nair says police stopped Anwar's car near his house and took him to the police headquarters Wednesday. Nair says Anwar was not handcuffed. He says "no reason was given" for the arrest. It was not clear why he was arrested since Anwar was scheduled to go to the police headquarters voluntarily later Wednesday for interrogation over the allegation that he sodomized a former male aide. Anwar has denied the charge as a political conspiracy. The sodomy accusation has slowed Anwar's campaign to topple the government.
