Merkel: Georgian borders not negotiable

German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized Russia's conduct in Georgia and says Georgia's territorial integrity is not negotiable. Merkel's remarks after a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev underscore the deep divide between Moscow and the West over Georgia. Russia has recognized Georgia's separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent nations. Merkel said that it was unacceptable for the West. She expressed hope on Thursday that international talks later this month would help resolve the issue. Medvedev said Russia did the right thing in Georgia, and that the war there demonstrated the need for a new international security system.
