Pakistani opposition leader defies house arrest

A spokesman for Nawaz Sharif says the Pakistani opposition leader has left his residence in defiance of an order placing him under house arrest. A convoy of vehicles left Sharif's villa in the eastern city of Lahore on Sunday, apparently headed for an anti-government rally where police were battling stone-throwing demonstrators. Sharif spokesman Asif Kirmani confirmed that the former prime minister was in the convoy.
