Peru: 19 killed in rebel bomb attack

Shining Path rebels ambushed a column of military trucks in Peru's southeastern mountains with a bomb and gunfire, the military high command said Friday, killing 12 soldiers and seven civilians in the deadliest rebel attack in years. Women and children were among those killed in the attack on the trucks, which were returning to the Cochabamba Grande base in Huancavelica province Thursday evening, the military said. The military statement said civilians were riding together in the trucks with soldiers when they were ambushed near the town of Tintaypunco.
