Rice says Bush team OK'd tough interrogations for terror suspects

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is defending tough interrogation techniques for terrorism suspects approved by the Bush administration in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, saying they were necessary to protect the US from new attacks. Rice's defense came Thursday during a visit to California in what were her most extensive public comments about how the administration dealt with detainee interrogations after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Rice insisted the methods of questioning complied with both US law and international treaty obligations. But she acknowledged that those rules had since changed and that the United States was a "different place" back then.
