Sarkozy names special envoy for Afghanistan

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has named a special envoy for Afghanistan charged with reinforcing France's role in supporting Afghanistan and Pakistan in their fight against the Taliban. Pierre Lellouche, the new envoy, is a specialist in international affairs and a lawmaker from Sarkozy's ruling UMP party. France has about 3,300 troops in the Afghan theater. Sarkozy said Tuesday that Lellouche will be expected to work closely with Richard Holbrooke, the newly named US special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
