Joe Kent, the top US security official who resigned over the war in Iran, is under an FBI investigation for allegedly leaking classified information, Semafor reported on Wednesday, citing three sources.
The investigation pre-dates his departure as the head of the National Counterterrorism Center on Tuesday, Semafor added. The FBI declined to comment on the report when contacted by Reuters.
A source also corroborated the report to NBC News.
US counterterror chief resigns over Iran war, claims Iran poses 'no threat'
The reports come days after Kent resigned his position, claiming in a post to X/Twitter that "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation." He went on to assert that the US initiated Operation Epic Fury due to pressure from Israel and its lobby in the US.
"I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran," Kent wrote. "Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful lobby."
Reuters reported at the time that Kent has long been known for his "America First" beliefs and has said he opposes US military interventions abroad.
This is a developing story.
