Sichuan says provincial death toll reaches 39,577 from earthquake

The Sichuan government said Tuesday that the provincial death toll from last week's earthquake in China has reached nearly 40,000.
Vice Governor Li Chengyun told a news conference Tuesday in the provincial capital that there were 39,577 confirmed deaths in the province from the May 12 earthquake, and that another 236,359 people had been injured.
