Sri Lankan military says 37 killed in new fighting

Sri Lankan troops closed in on a rebel-controlled town in the north Monday as fighting in the nation's civil war killed 32 guerrillas and five soldiers, the military said. Fighting between the two sides has escalated in recent months as government officials vowed to crush the Tamil Tiger rebels and military forces pushed northward, deep into rebel-held territory. Troops were closing in Monday from the south and west on the town of Mallavi, which lies along an important road in the north, military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said. Battles also erupted across the north Sunday.
