The police investigations unit at the Ministry of Justice opened an investigation into the death of a border police officer who was thought to have been killed by his colleague on Wednesday.
The incident took place at a base at Yad Mordechai in the south and police were investigating whether the accident happened following an argument between the two men or during a game.
During the incident the shooter pointed his weapon at the victim Avi Gronov's face. The weapon discharged a bullet hitting Gronov in the face. A second discharged bullet hit a wall.
MDA paramedics attempted to resuscitate Gronov at the scene and rushed him to Barzilai Medical Center in Ashkelon, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The shooter cooperated under extensive questioning on the base and subsequently freed on conditions. He claimed that he did not intend to shoot Gronov who will be laid to rest on Thursday in Sderot.
