A naked, suspected sex offender who ran over a female police officer in a hit-and-run in Bat Yam Thursday night was arrested following a two-hour manhunt across the Ayalon subdistrict, police said.
The man was found driving in an area of sand dunes near the beach outside Rishon Lezion and taken into custody.
Police said the incident began when a traffic police patrol saw a car parked near the Komemiyut junction that seemed suspicious. When they approached the vehicle and asked the driver – who was nude – to identify himself, a 17-year-old fled from the car and the driver took off, they said.
Pursued by police, the driver, a 54-year-old from Petah Tikva, made his way to the Komemiyut junction where he ran down the officer and continued toward Rishon Lezion.
Officers opened fire on the vehicle but it managed to flee.
Police said they didn’t know why the minor was in the vehicle or what had taken place there. They did say, however, that the teen and man had already known each other and that the minor was being questioned to determine what happened.
Initially, the National Traffic Police had said that a suspect in the hit-and-run was arrested, but within minutes they said the suspect remained at large. Also within minutes, police had ruled out the possibility of the incident being a terror attack.
