As the European Athletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin picked up steam on Wednesday, Israel’s triple-jumper Hanna Knyazyeva-Minenko qualified for the final with a 14.41-meter jump on her final attempt.

The 28-year-old Israeli skipper opened the competition poorly and, after scoring an insufficient result in her first jump (13.91m), her second jump was disqualified and caused quite a bit of concern for the entire Israeli delegation.

However, the experienced leaper, who has regularly appeared in the finals of the European and World Championships and won silver medals at the 2015 Worlds and 2016 Euros, nailed her third and final jump with a distance of 14.41 meters (her best result of the year), good for second place in qualifying.

“It was by far my toughest early competition,” said Minenko. “The heat was unbearable, the technical failure that negated my second jump jolted me a bit, and I knew that in the third jump I had to really rise to the occasion. I set the result of my year now and I hope to improve it in the final.”

The women’s triple-jump final will take place on Friday, while late Wednesday night, Israeli sprinter Donald Sanford took part in the 400-meter semifinals and the blue-and-white’s Lonah Chemtai Salpeter competed in the 10,000-meter race.
