Maj.-Gen. Yoel Strick replaced Maj.-Gen. Aviv Kochavi as head of the military’s Northern Command on Sunday.
Kochavi, who served in the post for two and a half years, was promoted to deputy chief of the General Staff. Strick had previously led the Home Front Command.
The changeover ceremony took place at the Northern Command’s headquarters in Safed and was attended by IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkot.
Eisenkot said Kochavi leaves the command prepared for any scenario.
“Aviv, you have led the Northern Command in a diverse and threat-filled arena and initiated important steps to improve the IDF’s operational capabilities,” he said.
“Every day, the command and its forces strengthened their capabilities in their readiness for war.
“I am sure that in the position as deputy chief of staff you will continue to improve the IDF’s preparedness and fulfill the realization of the army’s multiyear Gideon plan. Today you can and should be very proud of the quality and professionalism of the command which has achieved some notable achievements.”
“Responsibility for the security of the North moves to you, Yoel,” Eisenkot said, addressing Strick, who he said is “no stranger” to the northern border. “I am utterly certain that the great experience you have acquired over the years as an experienced commander with a lot of operational experience will benefit you as you lead the command facing present and future challenges.”
