A five-year-old Palestinian girl died on Sunday afternoon after she fell eight meters into a well in the village of al-Jib, northwest of Jerusalem. The well was apparently left open, and police were examining whether negligence was a factor in the girl's death. The girl, who had only recently moved to the area, was playing with friends when she apparently stumbled and fell into the well that was full of garbage and water, Channel 2 reported. She managed to grab hold of a broken plastic chair and keep herself above the surface for several minutes, but her strength soon waned and she went under. Firefighters called to the scene couldn't locate the girl due to the darkness inside the well, and she was eventually pulled out, some 30 minutes after falling, by scuba diving instructor and Magen David Adom paramedic Felix Lotan. She was evacuated in critical condition to Jerusalem's Shaare Tzedek Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. Lotan will receive a citation for his efforts on Monday from Magen David Adom Director-General Eli Ben-Zion. In mid-July, a three-year-old girl whose family recently immigrated from the US was killed after she fell into a manhole that was filled with poisonous fumes in the capital's Ramat Eshkol neighborhood.
