Meretz Faction Head Zehava Gal-On petitioned the High Court of Justice Tuesday morning, via Attorney Dafna Holtz-Lechner, to open the Winograd Committee hearings to the public.
Gal-On claimed it was the public's right to be informed of the proceedings of the probe into the shortcomings of the war in Lebanon.
"The echelon supposed to be interrogated by the committee is the echelon that appointed the interrogator. Conducting discussions behind closed doors, away from the public eye, not only harms public interest but also serves the direct interests of Prime Minister Olmert and the echelon responsible for the war, including the defense and foreign ministers," said Gal-On.
The Meretz Faction head also petitioned the court to publish the committee's protocols at the end of each meeting, unless they posed a genuine threat to state security.
Furthermore, an interlocutory order was filed for the committee to postpone its sittings and testimonies, including those of the prime minister, defense minister and foreign minister, until a final decision on Gal-On's petition was made.
