Gilad Schalit's French lawyers hope to meet Hamas leaders in Gaza

Two French lawyers representing the family of captive Corporal Gilad Schalit hope to travel to the Gaza Strip this week for talks with Hamas leaders to push for the young man's freedom, one of the lawyers said Sunday. The lawyer, Emmanuel Altit, said his efforts have been complicated by a sudden spike in fighting between Israeli military forces and Hamas militants. Nearly 70 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers have been killed in the past two days. "We don't know exactly when we will be able to go," he said. "We are waiting to know when it will be possible to discuss the Gilad Schalit case. That's why we're here." Schalit holds French citizenship, though Altit said he represented only the family, and not French authorities.
