Hadas Schalit, the younger sister of captive IDF soldier Gilad Schalit, was drafted into the military on Wednesday, where she will serve as a welfare officer. Her conscription comes as Egyptian and German-mediated negotiations between Israel and Hamas to free Gilad Schalit appeared to progress significantly in recent days, as indicated by statements from Hamas officials and the arrival of a Hamas delegation in Cairo this week. Hadas Schalit, 18, lives with her family in the village of Mitzpe Hilah in the Galilee. She has consistently shied away from the intense media spotlight that has been cast on the Schalit family, and has refused to grant interviews or to be photographed. Despite that, she did initially express an interest in joining Army Radio, and passed an examinations board for a position in the radio station. Ultimately, however, Schalit opted to become a welfare officer, a position which will see her care for the needs of combat soldiers. Accompanied by her family, Hadas made a discreet entrance at the IDF's Induction Center at Tel Hashomer on Wednesday, bypassing army collection points for recruits in the North, and arriving at a side-gate to avoid the media.
