Underworld crime figures David and Roni Harari, leaders of Ramat Gan's Ramat Amidar crime gang, were arrested Monday morning by Lachish police on charges of extortion and making threats.
The case centers on a man who told investigators that a businessman, who is known to police, had established contact with him and proposed a series of transactions concerning diamonds and jewels in Belgium. The man said that while there, the businessman robbed him, making off with cash, diamonds and jewellery worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Prior to returning to Israel, the man filed a complaint with Belgian police. Once home, he said the Harari brothers contacted him to say the businessman wanted them to "reach an arrangement" with him over the police complaint.
"The [Harari brothers] decided to fine him for tens of thousands of dollars and instructed him to transfer the money within a number of days, Lachish police said following an undercover investigation. "They threatened his life and described what they could do, and what they had done in the past, in order to obtain what they wanted."
The Ashdod Magistrate's Court extended the Harari brothers' remand by four days on Monday evening.
