Haredim set trash cans on fire in Jerusalem

July 2, 2009 14:44

Members of the Haredi community were setting trash cans on fire on Jerusalem's Bar Ilan Street on Thursday afternoon in protest of the Carta parking lot's opening on Saturdays. Police were on the scene and no traffic disturbances were reported. More protests were planned for this upcoming Saturday in anticipation that Jerusalem Major Nir Barkat would not change his mind regarding the opening of the parking lot on the Sabbath. Next week, the haredi community is planning to hold a march consisting of 5,000 children from Kikar Safra to the parking lot.
