Ministry intends to request a six month extension of the 7-year-old
temporary order which prevents Palestinians married to Israeli Arabs
from becoming Israeli citizens, Army Radio reported Thursday.
Every year, the
state extends the
measure, which is currently
due to expire in two months, for security reasons. This time, however, the ministry intends to
use the six month extension to implement parliamentary proceedings to
make the order into a permanent law.
Four years ago, the High Court of Justice ruled that the order was a
breach of fundamental human rights. It was also criticized for explicit prejudice
against a specific ethnic group in Israel.
