Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal said Saturday he was willing to speak to Hamas if it meant stopping the rocket attacks on Israel.
In an interview with London's Guardian newspaper, Moyal said: "I would say to Hamas, let's have a cease-fire, let's stop the rockets for the next 10 years and we will see what happens."
"If we don't talk we go deeper and deeper into war," Moyal said. This, he added, would mean "innocent people being killed on both sides."
Moyal said an attempt to arrange a meeting between himself and Hamas officials in Cairo had failed once in the past, but that he was still willing to participate in such talks.
"I believe that if they call me again I will be ready to do it. I will do the best I can to have that meeting," he said. "For me as a person the most important thing is life and I'm ready to do everything for that. I'm ready to talk to the devil."
