US agrees to grant visa to Filipino caregiver of elderly American immigrant

In an about-face, the American consulate in Jerusalem has granted a visa to the Filipino caregiver of a sickly 86-year-old American immigrant who plans to travel to the US this fall for the wedding of her grandson, the family said Thursday. The US-born elderly immigrant, Harriet Weitz, who lives in Jerusalem with her 88-year-old husband Meyer, has been under the care of a Filipino caregiver, Eden Cabullos, 43, for the last three years. Last month, as reported by The Jerusalem Post, the Consulate refused to provide the caretaker a visa for their trip. The Weitzs were subsequently issued a visa for the caretaker after they wrote in her contract that they agreed to pay her airfare, give her free room and board, and pay her the minimum NY state wage of $7.15 an hour while in the US, conditions which they agreed to from the start. "We are very grateful to all those who helped us make this story have a happy ending," Meyer Weitz said
