The 2019 Maccabi World Union Congress opened in Israel this week.

Maccabi World Union is the largest and longest running Jewish sports organization. It is the organizer of the Maccabiah Games, an international Jewish multi-sport event held every four years, that sees the participation of thousands of athletes.

The MWU Congress takes also place quadrennially.

Around 350 members of the organization arrived in Israel from North and South America, Europe, the former Soviet Union, Australia and South Africa.

The Keren Kayemet L’Israel-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) has supported the Maccabiah Games for 90 years.

One of the goals of the event is to strengthen the participants’ Jewish identity and connection to Israel.

“This is especially important now, during a time when we are seeing antisemitism rear its ugly head once again, through horrible acts of terror and untiring antisemitism around the world. At times, that same antisemitism masks itself under the title BDS,” commented KKL-JNF World Chairman Daniel Atar.

Among those attending the Congress are also Maccabi World Union President Jack Terpins and Chairman Amir Peled.
