Judaism can be described as both a culture and a religion, and some of us sometimes find ourselves lacking in both subjects. If you need a crash course in Jewish culture and trivia, look no further. This week, enlisting the aid of your iPhone, Appaholic brings you five apps that help target most of the Jewish-cultural deficiencies from which you might be suffering!

If funny doesn’t come naturally

Jewish Jokes App (Courtesy)

Jewish humor may be hereditary, but for those of you who received a lighter-than-average dosage of the funny-genes, your old friend “iPhone” is here to help.  Make Todd Greenwood’s Jewish Jokes your go-to app when you’re feeling light on your funny and brush up on your humor. These jokes rely on Jewish stereotypes, are often raunchy, likely offensive and feature a range of crassness, but all are Jewish to the bone and each will compel you to read on to the next.

Cost: $0.99
Supported formats: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

Should you require a crash course in Yiddish 101

Yiddish app (Courtesy)

For whatever reason, you didn’t get the requisite Yiddish background a traditional Jewish childhood is supposed to offer. And so, after services, while the old men at your synagogue eat herring, gab incomprehensibly and pepper their conversations with something that sounds remotely like a language, you stand to the side, unsuccessfully eavesdropping. Well, fear no more: meet the app that will make up for your Yiddish deficiencies. No, it’s no easy feat learning a new language, but Norman Snyder’s Yiddish Slang Terms  app will solidly prepare you with at least a few conversation starters and an easy in at the herring table.  Equipped with a dictionary, flashcards and a multiple choice quiz, get learning and give Yiddish a try.

Cost: $0.99
Supported formats: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

For those who want Jewish history at a relaxed pace

Jewish Fact a Day Calendar app (Courtesy)

Prefer to learn your Jewish history at a more tempered pace? How about one small fact a day? Alexander Seinfeld’s The Amazing Jewish Fact-a-Day Calendar may just be the ticket for you. Each day, learn a new fact about Judaism and Jewish history. If this fact piques your interest, click “more info” (or, “and more” and “still more”) and the app will route you an Amazon page where you can purchase related books and literature to learn more. Feel like spreading the wealth? Email particularly interesting apps to your friends and family.

Cost: $1.99
Supported formats: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

A mind for math

Jewdoku app (Courtesy)

We excel in math and we complicate everything. And now, true to this Jewish character, Vistance Consulting LLC presents: a merger between the very-fine-on-its-own Sudoku and the rather expansive subject of Jewish trivia, the ultimate Jewdoku. What is Jewdoku? you might ask. A timed, 9 game-boarded, ultimate super-sudoku, with a special twist: before you can fill in any cell, you have to correctly answer a question on Jewish trivia. Talk about a heart-racing, time crunching, mega-Sudoku thrill… Jewish Sudoku enthusiasts, take out your phones…

 Cost: $2.99
Supported formats: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

Jewish Trivia Quiz App (Courtesy)

You’ve been brushing up on your Yiddish, your Jewish history, sayings of the rabbis and every random Judaism-related fact you can absorb, and now you’re ready to put your knowledge to the test. “Is there an app for that?” you may be wondering. Good news: download Stephen Jordan’s Jewish Trivia Quiz. Please note: this game-center supported quiz is not for those weak of heart or mind; prepare to be tested on details big and small from Jewish religious prayers and customs to Jewish history and culture.

Cost: $1.99
Supported formats: iPhone, iPod touch, iPad

Appaholic is a bi-weekly column which thematically reviews mobile apps with a Jewish or Israeli twist. If you have an app to suggest, send details to
