Haifa bridge to be named after paratrooper

The new "Bridge of Lights" at the southern entrance to Haifa will be named in honor of the late former paratroop commander and Haifa city councilor Shmuel Arad, reports Yediot Haifa. The bridge, which connects to the Carmel tunnels, has been mounted with an electronically controlled railing of lights that can change colors and patterns according to the holiday or event being celebrated at the time. According to the report, an official ceremony to name the bridge after Arad will be held once the landscaping and gardening work currently taking place in the area is completed. Arad, born in 1947, served as a paratrooper during his army service and rose to command the paratroop brigade and later the Home Front Command. In June 2003, he was elected to the Haifa city council, but died suddenly of a heart attack just five months later.
