Ukraine has opened a new consulate in Haifa to service the 200,000 former Ukrainians who live in Haifa and northern Israel, reports www.local.co.il. The new consulate, which operates from the Oren building on Rehov Palyam, opened this week after Ukrainian ambassador Igor Timofeyev received authorization to set it up, in addition to the existing embassy in Tel Aviv.
According to the report, Mayor Yona Yahav reportedly asked Timofeyev to open a consulate after learning that some 40,000 former Ukrainians living in the north had turned to the Tel Aviv embassy for assistance in recent years. Timofeyev agreed to check the issue with the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, which found justification for setting up a consulate in Haifa.
