Car held over NIS 110 fine

An NIS 110 parking fine has escalated into a NIS 51,000 lawsuit because of a dispute between a Tel Aviv car owner and the municipality, reports Yediot Tel Aviv. The car's owner is suing the city for placing an attachment notice on his NIS 79,000 car over what was originally a small parking fine. According to the report, the car's owner discovered the attachment notice three years ago when he wanted to sell his vehicle and was told he could not. When he investigated, he found that the city had attached his car over an unpaid parking fine dating from 1995. While the original fine was for NIS 110, interest and late fees had added a further NIS 2,410 to the sum. The owner complained to the city that he had never received any request for payment and had never been told of any intended action against him, and the city agreed to cancel the debt. But recently the owner discovered that the attachment notice was still on the car. He has now issued a lawsuit for NIS 51,000 against the city, saying, "This sum is small compared to the damage that has been caused." In response, the city said that while it had cancelled the late fees and interest, it had not cancelled the original NIS 110 parking fine, and attaching the car was "a necessary step" to getting the fine paid.
