Gay activist city councilor Itai Pinkas is not running for re-election in the coming municipal elections, but the future is still looking pink in Tel Aviv, reports www.mynet.co.il. Three gay candidates are running for the council on different lists, and at least one of them stands a good chance of being elected. According to the report, the gay candidate with the best chance of winning a seat on the council is Yoav Goldring, founder of the tenants' rights organization Rent Control and number four on the Ir Le'Kulanu (City for Us All) list headed by Knesset member Dov Henin. Two other gay candidates are also running: Eran Lev, placed fourth on the Meretz list, and Yaniv Weitzman, third on the Tzeirim (youth party) list. The report said that while the three candidates differed in their political priorities, they all agreed that in the past 10 years under Mayor Ron Huldai, the city had made great strides toward combating homophobia and advancing homosexual rights, and that there was every chance that Tel Aviv could have a gay mayor one day. "There is definitely a chance that this could happen, just as there is a chance that any other person could be found appropriate for the job," Goldring said. "It won't happen just because gays vote for him. It happened in Paris (with the election of openly gay Bertrand Delanoe as mayor in 2001), and not because of gays."
