Visner signs coalition agreement despite Knesset plans

Greens Faction leader Pe'er Visner has agreed to join Tel Aviv Mayor Ron Huldai's ruling coalition and to serve as deputy mayor despite planning to run for a seat in the coming Knesset elections, reports www.mynet.co.il. If Visner ends up winning a Knesset seat in the February 10 elections, his place on the Tel Aviv council will be taken by his number two, Dan Lahat, the son of former Tel Aviv mayor Shlomo Lahat. According to the report, despite having being a perpetual thorn in Huldai's side during the last municipal term and despite having run against him for the mayor's position in the November municipal elections, Visner signed a coalition agreement with Huldai this week. He will continue to serve as deputy mayor, a position he held in the last term, and will be responsible for environmental issues in the council. The report said that the inclusion of the Greens Faction creates a wide-ranging coalition that takes in the Likud, the Youth Faction, the Pensioners' Party and the United Religious List. Shas is also expected to join the coalition, leaving only Dov Henin's Ir Lekulanu party in the opposition.
