12 killed as tourist bus crashes in Egypt

12 people were killed and 37 were wounded Monday after a bus collided head on with a delivery truck near the Red Sea resort town of Ras Sadr, the head of emergency services for the southern part of Egypt's Sinai peninsula said. Ibrahim Hassan said the 12 killed were seven foreign tourists and five Egyptians. He said the seven foreigners included citizens of the Netherlands, Russia and Ukraine but did not give a precise breakdown. Egypt has a history of serious bus and car crashes because of speeding, careless driving and poor road conditions. At least 8,000 people were killed in accidents in 2006, the most recent statistics available.
