Abbas to veto appointment of new PA police chief

A senior aide to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said on Friday that the PA leader had vetoed the appointment of Popular Resistance Committees head Jamal Abu Samhadana as the general inspector of a new Palestinian paramilitary police force. Abbas issued a presidential decree rejecting the decision of Interior Minister Said Siyam of Hamas, said Saleh Rafat, a member of the PLO Executive Committee. A Palestinian Interior Ministry spokesman stressed that in reality, a new police force was not being established but that the current establishment was being reinforced.
