President Bashar Assad discussed prospects for peace in the Middle East with former US President Jimmy Carter on Saturday.
Carter arrived in Syria from neighboring Lebanon Saturday where he spent five days talking to political leaders and offered that his Atlanta-based Carter Center monitor parliament elections there next year.
In Syria he is also expected to meet with the exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal.
