A prominent Egyptian political dissident has claimed a democracy lecture he was scheduled to deliver at the American University in Cairo was canceled because of government pressure.
Ayman Nour was jailed for nearly four years after challenging the country's longtime president in 2005 elections. He vowed after his release in February to continue his campaign for reform.
The private university says student organizers didn't follow procedures that require clearance for visiting speakers like Nour.
One of the students who organized Saturday's lecture, Nazly al-Kholy, said it was the first time such a clearance was required.
Nour said he was "astonished" his lecture was canceled after government pressure.
