Ihab Ghussein, spokesman for the Hamas-controlled Interior Ministry, said the explosion was caused by an Israeli airstrike, but the claim could not be verified. Some residents in the area reportedly said the explosion occurred from within the vehicle.
Ghussein said the man killed in the blast had been armed, though it was unclear to which group he belonged.
According to some reports, the man was a senior commander in the Army of Islam, an al-Qaida-linked group based in Gaza.
A spokesman for Gaza medical services said the man who was killed was
identified as Muhamad Jamal Nimnim from the Shati refugee camp, Ma'an News Agency reported.
The IDF had no immediate comment.
