Inmates riot at Lebanon's top prison, some prison guards taken hostage

Dozens of inmates rioted Thursday at Lebanon's largest prison and took several prison guards hostage, Lebanese security officials said. Riot police and reinforcements were sent to Roumieh penitentiary, to get the situation under control. Roumieh is Lebanon's main jail. It is made up of several buildings and the detainees there include four former generals held in connection with the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, and also members of the al-Qaida-inspired Fatah Islam militant group. The officials say neither the generals nor Fatah Islam members are near where Thursday's riots are taking place.
