Palestinian, Russian presidents talk Mideast peace

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have discussed ways to cooperate on Middle East peace during a meeting in the Kremlin. Medvedev said at Monday's talks that Russia is prepared to work with the Palestinian authorities. Russia is a member of the so-called Quartet seeking to broker peace in the Middle East, along with the United States, the European Union and the United Nations. Unlike other Quartet members, Russia recognizes the legitimacy of Hamas, the militant Islamic party that controls the Gaza Strip. That could give Russia considerable influence as mediator.
