Hamas announced on Thursday morning that West Bank Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti would be at the top of the list of security prisoners they want released in exchange for kidnapped IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit, according to London-based newspaper Al-Hayat. Hamas political leader Khaled Mashaal reportedly told Barghouti's wife that without her husband's release, Shalit would not be freed. According to the report, Hamas has demanded the release of 1,400 prisoners in three stages as part of the negotiations for the kidnapped soldier.
