Rice visits Jenin to view status of new security effort

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Jenin on Saturday, a former stronghold of gunmen in the West Bank. Her visit highlights Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' law-and-order campaign, seen as one of the few successes of halting Mideast peace efforts. Abbas' forces deployed in Jenin in the spring. It's part of his effort to assert control in the once unruly West Bank, moving step by step. However, Israel continues to carry out raids in cities now under Abbas' control. Israel says Abbas' troops are still not doing enough to rein in the gunmen. Palestinian commanders complain that the Israeli raids undermine their authority. Rice's visit is seen as a boost to Abbas' efforts. She is touring a Jenin hospital, and will meet with the Palestinian prime minister and local security chiefs.
