Syrian president meets Lebanese Christian leader

Syria's President Bashar Assad has met with a leading Lebanese Christian leader who nearly two decades ago fought a "war of liberation" against Syrian troops in Lebanon. Michel Aoun is expected to meet senior Syrian officials and leaders of the country's Christian community during his five-day visit here. He arrived Wednesday. As acting prime minister and military commander in 1989, Aoun fought against Syrian troops in Lebanon. A year later, Syrian troops drove his troops out of their positions, forcing him into 15 years of exile in France. He returned home in 2005. Aoun's visit to Syria has been criticized by anti-Syrian Lebanese politicians but he said his animosity toward Syria ended when Syrian troops left Lebanon in 2005.
