UN chief urges Hizbullah to be political party

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged on Sunday Syria and Iran to support the transformation of Lebanon's Hizbullah group from an armed guerrilla force to a political party. Ban was very concerned that the process of rearmament in Lebanon may be accelerating as a result of clashes last spring which saw Hizbullah's gunmen and Shi'ite allies defeat Sunni groups backing the government, a UN envoy told the UN Security Council on Thursday. The secretary-general called on Hizbullah to comply with a 2004 council resolution demanding the disarmament of all militias, Terje Roed-Larsen said. Ban was also gravely concerned at the apparent strengthening of extremist elements and foreign fighters in and around the northern city of Tripoli, he said.
