US official: US-appointed road map monitor will not act as judge

Three US generals will keep an eye on Israelis and Palestinians as they try to reach a peace deal in 2008, and the US secretary of state plans frequent Mideast trips, a senior US official said Saturday, detailing the Bush administration's ambitious plan to reverse its largely hands-off policy in the troubled region.
However, adding more minders may not be enough to break the impasse that has paralyzed negotiations for years, Israeli and Palestinian critics said. US President George W. Bush reiterated during his trip to Israel and the West Bank this week that he's at best willing to nudge the sides, but not settle their arguments.
Negotiations on core issues - borders, Jerusalem, Palestinian refugees - are to begin in coming days.
