US says Beirut embassy vehicle appears to have been targeted by blast

The State Department said Wednesday that a US Embassy vehicle hit by an explosion in the Lebanese capital of Beirut appears to have been the target of the blast that killed three people and wounded several others. Spokesman Sean McCormack said that US diplomats in Lebanon had taken appropriate security measures in light of the preliminary findings and that a joint team of agents from the department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the FBI would travel from Washington to Lebanon on Wednesday to investigate the incident. "At this point, I can't offer you a definitive final analysis as to whether or not the United States vehicle was targeted in this blast. However, preliminary evidence would indicate that it was targeted," he told reporters. "We have taken appropriate security precautions commensurate with the idea that it was targeted," McCormack said.
