Former Labor MK Nadia Hilu pressed charges against the rabbis who signed a petition saying Jews shouldn't sell or rent homes to gentiles, Israel Radio reported.Hilu, a Christian Arab, said that "the letter is a criminal offence, inciting violence and violating democracy." She reportedly filed an official complaint with the police.RELATED:A-G to check legality of rabbis' halachic banEditorial: Let the rabbis goHilu added that the rabbinical petition "can lead to more serious action, and perhaps they will command that Jews not sell anything to Arabs, or not allow them to ride on public transportation."She called upon every Arab to "drown" the police with complaints against the rabbis.On Thursday, Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein instructed his office to examine whether "criminal and disciplinary aspects allegedly exist" in the letter signed by nearly 50 municipal rabbis that protest renting or selling a plot of land to a non-Jew in Israel.“The attorney-general believes that... the statements attributed to the rabbis raise problems in a number of aspects, and apparently – at least in regard to people with a public position – are not in keeping with appropriate public conduct,” an aide to Weinstein, attorney Noa Mishor, wrote MK Ilan Gilon (Meretz) on Thursday, in respond to his recent demand that the rabbis’ letter be examined.“At the same time, the legal aspect of the issue is more complex, and the attorney-general has instructed the relevant elements in our office to examine if criminal and disciplinary aspects allegedly exist in the statements attributed to the rabbis,” Mishor added.Jonah Mandel contributed to this report.
