Israel faces two direct threats from Syria – the “leakage” of chemical weapons,
and terrorist infiltrations over the border – Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu
told Druse leaders on Thursday.
In addition, he said, Jerusalem is
concerned about rocket attacks on Israeli communities from
Netanyahu said Israel is prepared to deal with those scenarios, as
well as any threat from Syria or Lebanon.
The prime minister went to the
Druse villages of Julius and Daliat al-Carmel to mark the four-day Druse
festival of Nabi Shuayb.
“There is a special tie between the Jewish
people and the Druse community,” Netanyahu said. “I want to express Israel’s
appreciation to those Druse who fell defending the State of Israel. I am
speaking from personal experience in saying they are courageous and dedicated
fighters. I fought shoulder to shoulder with Druse fighters and officers, and my
brother of blessed memory [Lt.-Col. Yonatan Netanyahu] fought alongside
Druse fighters who brought honor and security to Israel. Neither I nor the
people of Israel forget that for a minute.”
